prototype hood in miniature
MAKING A PROTOTYPE
I made screenshots of the pattern for the Dundee Hood, copied into a PDF, and then printed. Using graph paper I made an enlarged (but still miniature) version to serve as a pattern for a small scale prototype to play around with (about 10” long—the traditional length of a doctoral hood is 4 feet). I sewed two pieces of lining together at the liripipe circle (and basted a line perpendicular to the diameter of the circle for a few inches, to stabilize). Then I sewed bias tape around the cowl edge and overlapped the ends (lining side up).
I opened up the cape, and —voilà – it looked like the real thing:
